HC Deb 04 May 1936 vol 311 c1326
1. Mr. DAY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India the number of persons who are still in gaol for political offences in India and the number who have been in gaol for more than five years?

Mr. BUTLER

The number of persons convicted of offences connected with the civil disobedience movement who are reported to be still in prison is five. None of these has been in prison for five years.

Mr. DAY

Are these sentences under periodical review?

Mr. BUTLER

The whole matter is always under consideration.

Mr. THURTLE

Are we to understand that that reply includes prisoners detained without having been tried?

Mr. BUTLER

They include, as I have said, imprisonment for civil disobedience offences.
