HC Deb 16 March 1936 vol 310 cc16-7
35. Mr. DAY

asked the Postmaster-General the total cost of installing the automatic system in the telephone exchanges in the London telephone area to the latest convenient date, including exchange equipment and external plant costs; and whether the officials of his Department report the satisfactory working of this system?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Major Tryon)

The total capital expenditure, exclusive of line plant costs, up to 31st March, 1935, was about £15,250,000. I am sorry that it is not practicable to separate the cost of line plant provided for automatic and manual exchanges. The answer to the latter part of the question is in the affirmative.

Mr. DAY

Can the right hon. Gentleman say when all the manual exchanges in London will be converted to the automatic system?

Major TRYON

I could not give that information without notice; it does not arise out of the question on the Paper.
