HC Deb 10 March 1936 vol 309 c1948
29. Mr. H. G. WILLIAMS

asked the President of the Board of Trade what is the present system adopted by the German Government in subsidising exports to the United Kingdom and to other markets?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Complete detailed information is not available regarding the several methods alleged to be adopted by the German Government to assist their export trade. I understand, however, that assistance is being given to exports from funds collected in the form of a levy on industry in Germany and that assistance is also available in the case of exports to certain markets by the grant of permission to German exporters to purchase blocked marks at a discount and to obtain, in exchange, free marks at their full value.

Sir P. HANNON

Will this very serious competition which is assisted in this way by the. German Government be taken into consideration when the new agreement with Germany is being considered?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Certainly this is one of the factors that must be taken into consideration.
