HC Deb 09 March 1936 vol 309 c1771
1. Mr. DAY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India the total amount of iron and steel imported into India for the 12 months ended to the last convenient date from the United Kingdom and from all other countries separately; and how these figures compare with the year 1913–14?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Butler)

During the financial year 1934–35, 370,000 tons of iron and steel were imported into India. Of this, 182,000 tons were supplied by the United Kingdom and 188,000 tons by all other countries. In 1913–14 the corresponding figures were:—total, 1,018,000 tons; United Kingdom, 609,000 tons; other countries, 409,000 tons.

Mr. DAY

Can the Minister say why there is such an enormous decrease in the exports to India?

Mr. BUTLER

Actually there has been a slight proportional increase of the British portion.

Mr. DAY

Can the Minister tell the House how much of the iron and steel was imported for Government contracts?

Mr. BUTLER

Perhaps the hon. Member will put down that question.
