HC Deb 09 March 1936 vol 309 cc1771-2
2. Mr. GALLACHER

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he will direct an inquiry into the action of the Calcutta police who, on 12th January last, arrested Jyotish Chandra Chakravarti while getting medicine for his small nephew stricken with cholera, broke his bottle of medicine, and prevented him from communicating with the parents of the child, who died within 24 hours?

Mr. BUTLER

An inquiry into this incident was instituted by the Commissioner of Police immediately it came to his notice and proceedings against the three members of the police force concerned are now pending in consequence. I understand that it has been reported to the Government of Bengal that the patient for whom the bottle of medicine was intended did in fact receive proper medical treatment throughout.

Mr. GALLACHER

Will the man referred to be considered for compensation in respect of his arrest?

Mr. BUTLER

As an inquiry is pending, I think that the hon. Gentleman had better await the result of the inquiry.
