HC Deb 02 March 1936 vol 309 c983
38. Mr. LOGAN

asked the Minister of Labour whether his attention has been called to the fact that a quotation for Government engineering work by a Liverpool firm was recently not accepted on the grounds that the work should be given to distressed areas; and, in view of the great unemployment in Liverpool, is he prepared to rescind his decision?

Lieut.-Colonel MUIRHEAD

My right hon. Friend has received representations with reference to the exclusion of Liverpool from the scheduled depressed areas, to which a preference is given, other things being equal, in the allocation of Government contracts. He has reviewed the general question of the scheduled areas, and as a result has decided to add to the schedule a number of areas, suffering from severe and prolonged unemployment, of which Liverpool is one.
