63. Mr. H. G. WILLIAMS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer who are the present beneficiaries in respect of the payments referred to on page 43 of the Finance Accounts of the United Kingdom, and described in the following terms: D'Auverquerque, Henry de Nassau, Lord, North Wales, £375 16s., Fillingharne, otherwise Langharne, rent resolute out of the castle of, South Wales, £75 10s.?

Mr. W. S. MORRISON

The present payees are the Governor and Company of the Bank of England, and the Earl of Dysart, respectively.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Would my hon. and learned Friend consider the possibility of doing a deal with the Governor of the Bank of England with a. view to bringing this perpetual annuity to an end?

Mr. MORRISON

With regard to both these annuities repeated efforts have been made from time to time to secure their commutation, but so far without result.

Mr. SHINWELL

Can the hon. and learned Gentleman say why the Governor of the Bank of England receives this annuity?

Mr. MORRISON

Yes, Sir. The original annuity was granted to the heirs or assigns of the grantees, and it has been sold to various persons from time to time and has passed by sale into the custody of the Bank of England.
