HC Deb 02 March 1936 vol 309 cc975-6
1. Mr. DAY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India how many disturbances have taken place in British India during the three months ended to the last convenient date, giving figures of any fatal casualties; and the numbers of military police or infantry posted in these areas and the numbers employed as the result of these disturbances?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Butler)

During the three months ended 31st December, 1935, there were ten disturbances in British India, mostly of a minor character, involving eight fatal casualties altogether. I regret that I have no particulars available to enable me to answer fully the second part of the question, but troops were employed on one occasion only.

Mr. DAY

Can the hon. Gentleman say whether any of the fatal casualties occurred among Europeans?

Mr. BUTLER

Not without notice.

Mr. DAY

Have the military police and the infantry returned to their ordinary areas?

Mr. BUTLER

Yes.
