HC Deb 29 June 1936 vol 314 cc17-8
61. Mr. H. G. WILLIAMS

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in the light of the new circumstances, His Majesty's Government are prepared to consider giving some assistance to British subjects and firms which have suffered serious losses through the operation of sanctions; and whether the Government are prepared to appoint a committee to inquire into the extent of these losses?

Dr. BURGIN

In reply to the first part of the question, I regret that I cannot add anything to the answer on this subject which was given to the hon. Member for Lincoln (Mr. Liddall) on 12th May. In the circumstances indicated in that answer I do not think that the appointment of a committee as suggested by my hon. Friend would serve any useful purpose.

Mr. PETHERICK

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that these firms have suffered seriously?

Dr. BURGIN

Yes, Sir.

Lieut. - Colonel ACLAND-TROYTE

Will my hon. Friend remember that agriculture has also suffered as a result of sanctions?
