HC Deb 30 July 1936 vol 315 cc1707-8
37. Mr. JAGGER

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the recent case in which Mrs. Helen Allcorn was condemned to death for the murder of her two-year-old daughter and subsequently reprieved, and of the fact that such cases frequently recur in which mothers found guilty of the murder of their young children are condemned to death when there is no intention of executing the sentence, he is now prepared to introduce legislation to put an end to this cruelty?

Sir J. SIMON

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given by the Under-Secretary of State to a question by the hon. Member for Shoreditch (Mr. Thurtle) on 30th March last.

Mr. JAGGER

Arising from that question and in view of the increase in the common decency with which the public looks upon this kind of thing, does not the Home Secretary think it unfortunate that the Government do not share that improved sense of decency?
