HC Deb 21 July 1936 vol 315 cc234-5
33. Mr. T. JOHNSTON

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what quantities of milk have been supplied in the counties of Roxburgh, Berwick and Selkirk under the milk-in-schools scheme?

Sir G. COLLINS

No milk has been supplied under the milk-in-schools scheme in the counties named.

Mr. JOHNSTON

Does the right hon. Gentleman not think it is a shameful state of affairs that, under the administration of his Department, there should not be, in the three counties specified, one pennyworth of milk supplied to the schoolchildren?

Sir G. COLLINS

The right hon. Gentleman knows that the matter rests with the local authorities, and in these counties the local authorities refuse to accept any milk other than certified milk from their own areas, on terms and conditions that are at variance with the conditions of the scheme. I have no power to overrule these local authorities.
