HC Deb 15 July 1936 vol 314 c2029
28. Brigadier - General CLIFTON BROWN

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, in view of the possibility that the operations in Palestine are being hindered by a lack of mounted troops, he will take steps to secure some cavalry regiments from Egypt to enable the authorities to deal more promptly with the situation?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

The importance of mobility is fully recognised and, as I stated in the House, on 8th July, a mechanised cavalry regiment has recently been sent to Palestine.

Brigadier-General BROWN

In view of the fact that these operations have been hindered owing to the lack of mounted troops, could not steps be taken to get mounted troops from India or some other place?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

That is a matter for the officer commanding troops in Palestine rather than for me. He sees what sort of troops he wants and applies to the War Office for them. It is not for me to express an opinion.

Brigadier-General BROWN

In view of the fact that the War Office has done away with the mounted troops and has to look elsewhere for them in settling these situations, cannot he get mounted troops from India or Egypt?

Captain HAROLD BALFOUR

Will the right hon. Gentleman send the Cavalry Militia there?
