HC Deb 15 July 1936 vol 314 cc2029-30
29. Mr. RILEY

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the number of native and European children of school age in Kenya and Northern Rhodesia and the number of such children, respectively, for whom a regular system of public education is provided?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

As regards the first part of the question, precise information as to the number of native children in Kenya and Northern Rhodesia is not available. The total native populations of the two territories are, however, estimated at 3,000,000 and 1,350,000 respectively. According to the most recent report the number of European children of school age in Northern Rhodesia is 1,331. No figure is available for Kenya. In Kenya, at the end of 1934, the number of European children enrolled in Government and Government-aided schools was 1,827, and the number of native children enrolled was 104,393. In Northern Rhodesia, at the end of 1935, the number of European children enrolled in Government-controlled and aided institutions was 1,045 and the number of native children 93,594.

Mr. RILEY

Is the right hon. Gentleman satisfied with the provisions made for the education of native children in these territories and what steps is he taking to improve it?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

I am not satisfied with education anywhere, but in so far as the money available is being spent, I think it is being well spent.
