HC Deb 15 July 1936 vol 314 cc2018-9
6. Mr. LIDDALL

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will inform the Brazilian Government that His Majesty's Government desires that the permission by the Rio de Janeiro authorities to the Cantareira e Viacao Fluminense Company and the Leopoldina Terminal Company to adjust their tariffs shall now be issued, so as to terminate the long-continued hardship to British investors?

Mr. EDEN

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply which I gave to a question put by him on this subject on 6th July. In the circumstances I do not think that any action on the part of His Majesty's Government is called for at the present time.

Sir ARTHUR MICHAEL SAMUEL

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this question has been under discussion for at least three years, probably four, and will he make further representations to the Brazilian Government and press for a decision?

Mr. EDEN

I understand that a decision has been given for an increase of 50 per cent.
