HC Deb 08 July 1936 vol 314 c1205
77. Mr. DAY

asked the Minister of Pensions, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, the estimated cost of the new Employment Exchange to be erected in Walworth Road, Borough; whether any additional land has been purchased or leased for this purpose; what will be the area of the Exchange when completed; has the present site been purchased freehold; when this work will be commenced; and when it is anticipated it will be completed?

The MINISTER of PENSIONS (Mr. R. S. Hudson)(for the First Commissioner of Works)

The site of the existing Exchange is held on a lease until 1942 with breaks in 1938 and 1940. It is intended that the new Exchange shall be built on a site for which negotiations are now in progress. The estimated cost of the new building (apart from the site, the price of which is not yet known) is about £27,500 and the floor area of the Exchange will be about 24,000 square feet. I am afraid that until it is definitely known when vacant possession can be obtained, it is not possible to give any useful information as to building dates, but the hon. Member can be assured that every effort will be made to avoid delay.

Mr. DAY

Can the hon. Member say whether the plans have been prepared for this site?

Mr. HUDSON

I must have notice of that question.
