HC Deb 02 July 1936 vol 314 cc596-7
28. Mr. LESLIE

asked the Minister of Health how many maternity and child welfare committees provide milk and nourishment free for necessitous, expectant, and nursing mothers; and how many provide dinners for mothers?

The MINISTER of HEALTH (Sir Kingsley Wood)

In England and Wales, milk is supplied free, or at less than cost price, to necessitous expectant mothers by 402 maternity and child welfare authorities, and to necessitous nursing mothers by 400 of these authorities. A large proportion of these authorities also supply other foods for necessitous expectant and nursing mothers. Meals for mothers are provided at dining centres by 41 authorities.

Miss WILKINSON

Is it the policy of the right hon. Gentleman's Department to urge on authorities which are not providing these services the necessity of doing so?

Sir K. WOOD

We always endeavour to induce authorities to act in the way suggested.
