HC Deb 08 December 1936 vol 318 c1826
51. Mr. W. JOSEPH STEWART

asked the Secretary for Mines whether, in view of the fact that much research and experimental work has been carried out, the Government will now take steps to introduce a scheme for the home production of oil by erecting hydrogenation plants in the Special Areas so as to hasten the development of this industry, and thus provide work for unemployed miners and other classes of labour?

Captain CROOKSHANK

The question of taking further steps to increase the production of oil from coal is one of the matters raised in the recent report on the Special Areas in England and Wales presented by Mr. Malcolm Stewart. As the hon. Member is aware, the recommendations contained in that report are under the active consideration of the Government.

Mr. MATHERS

Will the hon. and gallant Gentleman keep in mind that there is a depressed area in Scotland where more could be done in producing oil from shale?
