HC Deb 27 April 1936 vol 311 cc537-8
5. Mr. V. ADAMS

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether His Majesty's Government are now aiming at a convention for the general limitation of armaments; and whether the progressive expansion of our armed contribution to collective security is to be contingent upon a failure to attain such a limitation?

Mr. EDEN

I would remind my hon. Friend that the Prime Minister stated in the course of the Debate on 9th March that His Majesty's Government will do their utmost to get other nations to agree upon measures for disarmament. I would also refer my hon. Friend to Section 8 of the proposals drawn up by the Locarno Powers on 19th March, which were published in Cmd. Paper 5134. The conclusion of an agreement for arms limitation would naturally have its effect upon the defence programme of His Majesty's Government.
