HC Deb 27 April 1936 vol 311 c548
36. Mr. STOURTON

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether any steps are being taken for the safeguarding of the national possessions contained in the London art galleries and museums in the event of air attack?

The FIRST COMMISSIONER of WORKS (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)

This subject has received my personal attention in consultation with the directors of the principal museums and galleries in London. Arrangements are now under review for the safeguarding of the more important national possessions in certain of the museums and art galleries in London, in the event of air attack, by their removal in the unhappy event of war to less vulnerable places.

Mr. THURTLE

Will the right hon. Gentleman bear in mind that if this projected air attack takes place, there may be no population left to admire these art treasures?
