HC Deb 22 April 1936 vol 311 cc142-3
25. Mr. DAY

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is now able to make a statement with reference to the construction of the proposed new Charing Cross bridge?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Mr. Hore-Belisha)

The Committee dealing with this matter have, I understand, now-completed their investigations and are about to consider their report.

Mr. DAY

Cannot the Minister say whether it is proposed to abandon this idea in favour of building a tunnel under the Thames?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

No, Sir, I have said that the Committee are considering their report.

Mr. DAY

Can the right hon. Gentleman say when it will be published, as it is most important that people should know?

Mr. MATHERS

Will the right hon. Gentleman's responsibility in respect of projects of this kind be affected by the control which the Chancellor of the Exchequer is taking of the Road Fund?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

There is no change in the position whatever.
