HC Deb 22 April 1936 vol 311 cc148-9
36. Captain PETER MACDONALD

asked the Postmaster-General whether any decision has yet been reached by the Government as to the action they intend to take on the Ullswater Report on broadcasting; and whether the Government intend to reach a decision in this matter before the report has been debated in Parliament?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Major Tryon)

The report of the Ullswater Com- mittee on broadcasting is at present wider consideration by the Government, and I hope that the House will have an opportunity of giving its views on the Government's proposals when these deliberations are completed.

Captain MACDONALD

Will an opportunity be given to the House to express its views on the subject?

Major TRYON

As the hon. and gallant Member knows, the Prime Minister has said that he is anxious that the House should have an opportunity of expressing its views.

Mr. EMMOTT

Will it be possible to give the House an opportunity of discussing this matter other than on the Post. Office Vote, in view of the importance of the subject and in view of the fact that discussion on the Post Office Vote is comparatively circumscribed?

Major TRYON

That is not a matter for me to settle. Personally, I should welcome a full discussion in order to get the views of hon. Members in all parts of the House.

Mr. E. J. WILLIAMS

Will the Postmaster-General see that the employés are given proper conditions of labour and the same freedom as is given to employés of private firms in this country?

Major TRYON

That is not a matter which is in the hands of the Post Office.
