HC Deb 22 May 1935 vol 302 cc351-2
14. Mr. MAXTON

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that His Highness the Duke of Mecklenburg has lately visited the Gold Coast; that he was entertained by the governor of the Colony during his visit; that the last governor of German Togoland was the Duke of Mecklenburg; and whether he will give an assurance that the question of offering the League of Nations mandate for Togoland to Germany will not be discussed by His Majesty's Government with the German Government during the continuance of the present régime in Germany?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The answer to the first three parts of the question is in the affirmative. With regard to the last part of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given by the Prime Minister on the 9th of April last.

Mr. MAXTON

Could the right hon. Gentleman refresh my memory as to what was the essence of that reply?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

Yes, Sir, it was that His Majesty's Government reaffirm the many statements which have been made both by this and previous Governments in relation to mandates.

Mr. MAXTON

Could the right hon. Gentleman summarise into a sentence what those various statements meant?

Mr. SPEAKER

That would be getting into a very bad habit.
