HC Deb 22 May 1935 vol 302 c322
2. Major-General Sir ALFRED KNOX

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the activities of Communist troops in the Chinese Provinces of Kweichow, Yunnan, and Szechuan, steps have been taken, in cooperation with the Chinese Government, to secure the safety of British residents in these provinces?

Sir J. SIMON

Yes, Sir. His Majesty's Consular Officers are in close touch with the local authorities and all possible steps have been taken to ensure the safety of British subjects in these provinces.

Sir A. KNOX

Can anything be done to assist the Chinese Government to deal with this Communist menace, which takes 60 per cent. of the revenue of the Nanking Government and is impoverishing the country?

Sir J. SIMON

That is a matter for the Chinese Government.
