HC Deb 21 May 1935 vol 302 cc169-70
13. Mr. LUNN

asked the Secretary for Mines how many pithead baths have been opened at mines in Great Britain; how many men and boys are already catered for by them; how many baths are under construction; and what is the capital amount which has been allocated from the Miners' Welfare Fund for this purpose?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Dr. Burgin)

I have been asked to reply. There are at present 194 pithead baths in Great Britain providing accommodation for about 236,000 wage earners. This number includes 12 baths provided wholly at the expense of the colliery owners and four partly at their expense. Nineteen more baths are under construction. The total amount allocated out of the Miners' Welfare Fund to date for the construction of pithead baths is approximately £3,401,000.

Mr. LUNN

Can the hon. Member say how long it will be before we have provided bath accommodation for all miners in the industry?

Dr. BURGIN

Not without notice.
