HC Deb 13 March 1935 vol 299 cc389-90
45. Captain CUNNINGHAM-REID

asked the Lord President of the Council whether the Water Pollution Research Board of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has now discovered a remedy for river pollution by milk and cheese factories; and whether he will make a statement?

Mr. BALDWIN

Laboratory experiments have been carried out for the Water Pollution Research Board during the past two years at the Rothamsted Experimental Station into problems of effluents from dairies and milk products factories. They have indicated promising methods of preventing river pollution by these waste effluents. Arrangements have now been made, with the financial co-operation of the milk industry, to carry these laboratory experiments to the commercial scale. These large scale experiments will be put in hand as rapidly as possible. It is hoped that they will supply the remedy mentioned in the question.
