HC Deb 07 March 1935 vol 298 cc2107-8
14. Mr. RHYS DAVIES

asked the Home Secretary whether any progress is being made to deal with the effects on the respiratory organs of cotton scotching and card-room operatives; and, if so, can he now make a statement on the matter?

Sir J. GILMOUR

If, as I suppose, the hon. Member refers to the question of the provision of compensation for com plaints like bronchitis and asthma, this, for the reason given in my replies to questions on the 1st November last, is a very difficult matter, but representatives of both sides were to meet early in the year to explore the problem further and I trust that these negotiations will result in some fair solution.

Mr DAVIES

May we take it that the right hon. Gentleman is taking active interest in this very serious problem?

Sir J. GILMOUR

Yes, Sir.

Sir WILFRID SUGDEN

Will my right hon. Friend accept the report of the visiting surgeons of the mills on this question before he finally comes to a decision?

Sir J. GILMOUR

Of course, I shall have to take into consideration all points of view.
