HC Deb 07 March 1935 vol 298 cc2124-5
56. Mr. THORNE

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can make a statement as to the settlement made by Rumania in connection with her commercial debts to this country; the amount involved; and by what method the money was raised?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

For information as to the principal provisions of the Anglo-Rumanian Payments Agreement and the amount involved, I would refer the hon. Member to the statement which I made on the 8th February in reply to the hon. and gallant Member for Stockport (Mr. Hammersley). I may add that the agreement was ratified by the Rumanian Government on the 19th February and came into operation on the 25th February. The sum of £400,000 has been paid into the special account at the Bank of England. I am not in a position to say by what method the money was raised.
