HC Deb 25 June 1935 vol 303 cc942-3
49. Mr. CRAVEN-ELLIS

asked the Prime Minister whether the Government will favourably consider calling a conference of the leading industrial nations to consider world economic conditions, with a view to coming to an agreement that will give to all nations a better opportunity of disposing of their production in the world markets which is in excess of home requirements?

The PRIME MINISTER

His Majesty's Government are most anxious at all times to do everything in their power to stimulate the movement of international trade, but I do not think that at the present juncture this purpose would be served by calling together a conference, as may hon. Friend suggests.

Mr. CRAVEN-ELLIS

Has it been definitely decided that the Lord President of the Council is going to visit the United States of America; and, if so, will he, while there, discuss the advisability of America entering into co-operation with the British Empire to find some method of stabilising foreign exchange rates?

The PRIME MINISTER

In answer to the first part of the question, I believe that some rumour to that effect has been circulated, but it is without foundation, as most rumours are.
