HC Deb 25 June 1935 vol 303 c937
34. Mr. SALT

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is prepared to consider any scheme to encourage employers to increase the number of apprentices in their works, in view of the shortage of skilled craftsmen and artisans?

Mr. E. BROWN

I am discussing with the main industries of the country the general question of re-absorbing the unemployed. The question of the training of young persons is being carefully considered in the course of these conversations.

Mr. SALT

Does my right hon. Friend not consider that the instruction which is now provided could be better used to increase the number of apprentices?

Mr. LAWSON

When the right hon. Gentleman says that the Government are discussing the matter with the main industries of the country, does that include the workmen's organisation?

Mr. BROWN

Certainly. We began with a general discussion with the Federation on the one hand and the Trade Union Council on the other.

Mr. KIRKWOOD

What are the trades in which there is a shortage of skilled labour?

Mr. BROWN

There is another question on the Paper about that.
