HC Deb 17 June 1935 vol 303 cc6-7
9. Mr. VYVYAN ADAMS

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what progress has been made towards negotiating the limitation of European air armaments and a western air pact of mutual guarantee?

Sir S. HOARE

I would ask my hon. Friend to await the answer I am about to give to a question which the right hon. Gentleman the Member for Darwen (Sir H. Samuel) is to put to me by Private Notice to-day.

Sir HERBERT SAMUEL

(by Private Notice) asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will state what progress has been made with the negotiations between the Locarno Powers for an air pact, providing for mutual assistance against an aggressor, for the limitation of air forces and other connected matters?

Sir S. HOARE

My answer to this question will also answer the question of the hon. Member for West Leeds (Mr. V. Adams).

I can assure the right hon. Gentleman that His Majesty's Government are giving these matters the most careful consideration, and that they fully realise their extreme urgency. The right hon. Gentleman will, however, realise that various questions, both of principle and procedure, are involved that inevitably require an interchange of views between the Powers concerned. I think that, in the circumstances, it would be better that I should not enter into further details.
