HC Deb 05 June 1935 vol 302 c1852
28. Mr. ALAN TODD

asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been drawn to the congestion of traffic in the city of Birmingham; and whether he will urge on the city authorities the necessity of public vehicles drawing up on the kerb of the road instead of some distance out as is at present the case?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I understand that the corporation of Birmingham has not yet prohibited the parking of vehicles along both sides of the streets, and that therefore there are likely to be two lines of standing vehicles along the kerbs, one line each way of moving vehicles. An omnibus driver may therefore hesitate to draw in to the side of the street to set down passengers because he- may have difficulty in getting into the line of moving traffic again. If the corporation of Birmingham desire to submit for confirmation an order restricting the use of through streets as parking places, it will have the same favourable consideration as similar orders submitted to me by other local authorities. I desire to emphasise that, in my view, through streets should be used for the purposes for which they are provided and not as parking places.
