asked the Minister of Transport whether he is in a position to make a statement as to the progress made in the installation of pedestrian crossings in Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Cardiff, and Bristol?

Schemes for pedestrian crossings have been submitted by certain of the authorities mentioned and have been approved. I am this week notifying county boroughs in England and Wales and large burghs in Scotland of my intention to offer grants from the Road Fund on certain conditions towards the provision of crossings, and I have no doubt that as a result thereof the authorities will expedite progress
