HC Deb 05 June 1935 vol 302 cc1866-7
5. Mr. HALES(for Mr. HALL CAINE)

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many of the administrative officials at Tangier are British, Spanish, Italian and French, respectively; what approximate proportion of the revenue raised in taxation from the European inhabitants of Tangier is supplied by British residents; what proportion of the annual tonnage of shipping entering and leaving Tangier harbour is British; and whether he is satisfied that under the existing arrangements the relative importance of British interests and capital invested in Tangier is adequately represented in the administration thereof?

Mr. EDEN

Of the officials of the Tangier administration of all categories (including customs and gendarmerie) there are eight British, 91 Spanish, 17 Italian and 89 French. The administrative posts of administrators, magistrates and engineers include two British, four Spanish, two Italian and four French. The British proportion of the European share of the urban tax is 31.36 per cent. As regards shipping tonnage, the figures at my disposal show a British proportion of 50.8 per cent. for 1934. The British share of the above-mentioned administrative posts is governed by the Tangier Statute. His Majesty's Government are of opinion that the small British share in the junior posts of the administration should be remedied to some extent as vacancies arise.
