HC Deb 23 July 1935 vol 304 cc1651-2
30. Miss WARD

asked the Minister of Health how many local authorities have taken Advantage of the clauses which make compensation payable to shopkeepers possible under slum-clearance programmes?

Sir K. WOOD

Complete information is not available, but at the 28th February last, the latest date for which information is available, 125 local authorities had either made grants to displaced shopkeepers or provided alternative accommodation or had applications then under consideration.

Miss WARD

In view of the fact that a great many shopkeepers are unaware of the provisions of the various Acts which relate to compensation, would my right hon. Friend consider asking the local authorities, when slum clearance or overcrowding schemes are put into operation, to inform shopkeepers in the districts affected of their rights under the various Acts?

Sir K. WOOD

I will consider that suggestion. Of course, the answer I have given may give some publicity in that direction.

Mr. KIRKWOOD

As the shopkeepers are to get compensation as a result of slum clearance, what about the engineers and the miners when, as a result of rationalisation, they lose their employment?
