HC Deb 17 July 1935 vol 304 cc1027-8
8. Captain PETER MACDONALD

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what arrangements will be made to ensure that Captain Kane will be adequately represented when his appeal is heard in Madrid; and what steps have been taken by the British Embassy in that place to secure proper treatment for this officer?

Sir S. HOARE

With regard to the first part of the question, Captain Kane has secured a legal representative who is working in close touch with His Majesty's Embassy in preparing the case for the appeal which is now expected to be heard by 26th July. As regards the second part, Captain Kane has been granted the privilege of residing in a hotel under guard instead of remaining in prison, and he was transferred from prison to the Hotel Catalonia at Palma on 13th July.

Viscountess ASTOR

Can the right hon. Gentleman say who is paying for the hotel? That is very important.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

In view of this and similar cases, will the Government issue some warning against tourists visiting Spain at the present time?
