HC Deb 17 July 1935 vol 304 c1036
28. Sir W. BRASS

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is now in a position to give the House information as to the progress he is making with the local authorities with regard to the de-restricting from the 30-miles-per-hour speed limit of roads which are either arterial roads or roads to which the limit was not really intended to apply?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

The total number of lengths of road put forward for consideration is 335. At the end of last week investigation had been completed and decisions reached in about one-fourth of this number. The remainder are under investigation and are being dealt with as expeditiously as possible. I will circulate detailed figures in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Sir W. BRASS

As progress is very slow, would the right hon. Gentleman consider communicating with local authorities in order to try to accelerate it?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I would not describe the progress as slow, but rather as careful. The Parliamentary Secretary is devoting personal attention to the matter and is visiting a large number of roads which he wishes to get in a satisfactory condition as quickly as possible.

Following are the figures:

The total number of lengths of road suggested for derestriction is 335.

The following table indicates the position with respect to these roads.

Agreed to be derestricted 49
Investigated and refused 33
Under investigation by the Ministry 125
Under discussion with Local Authorities 90
Local inquiries arranged or held in respect of 38
