HC Deb 09 July 1935 vol 304 cc131-2
2. Mr. PARKINSON

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs in what part of Southern Rhodesia were the roads made by native cattle-owners without compulsion; and whether he will set up an inquiry into the conditions of road-making in the native reserves of the charter district of Mashonaland?

Lord STANLEY

The answer which my right hon. Friend gave to the hon. Member for Colne Valley (Mr. Mallalieu) on the 14th May was based upon information supplied to him as a result of an inquiry made by the Chief Native Commissioner of Southern Rhodesia with regard to allegations which had been made concerning the construction of roads in the Charter District. In the circumstances I see no need for further inquiries.

3. Mr. PARKINSON

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether the Government of Southern Rhodesia has been a party to the discussions on the possible transfer of the South African Protectorates to the Union; and what portion of Bechuanaland, if any, would, in the event of such transfer, be allocated to Southern Rhodesia?

Lord STANLEY

As stated in the reply to the hon. Member's question on the 16th April, a despatch has been received from the Government of Southern Rhodesia on this subject. In reply it has been intimated that their views will not be overlooked in connection with future developments as to the position of the Bechuanaland Protectorate, but their attention has also been called to the position of the Union of South Africa in the matter. Reference to the subject is included in the aide-mémoire which my right hon. Friend handed to General Hertzog.
