HC Deb 09 July 1935 vol 304 c161
53. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many qualified doctors are resident in Ceylon and how many persons there are for each doctor?

Mr. M. MacDONALD

At the end of 1934 there were 824 medical practitioners registered in Ceylon. There are approximately an average of 6,630 persons for each doctor.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Can my right hon. Friend give the House any idea why they have so few doctors? Is it because the wages of the workpeople are too small for them to be able to afford doctors?

Mr. MacDONALD

One reason why there are not so many doctors in comparison with other countries is that the pay of the doctors, I am afraid, is lower than in many countries.

Dr. SALTER

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that in this country at the present moment there are scores of Cingalese waiting for admission to British medical schools in order to obtain their medical education, and that a colour bar is being enforced and they are not being admitted?
