HC Deb 09 July 1935 vol 304 cc136-7
7. Mr. GIBSON

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can state when British creditors for amounts exceeding £20 may expect to receive payment of their accounts under the Anglo-Rumanian Agreement; and what steps he proposes taking to obtain fulfilment of the conditions of that agreement?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

The facts are as stated in the reply I gave to my hon. Friend on 25th June. The position of the Anglo-Rumanian Payments Agreement is about to be discussed in London with representatives of the Rumanian Government who are coming for this purpose.

Mr. GIBSON

In view of the great anxiety on the part of industrialists, particularly in the West Riding of Yorkshire, who have hundreds of thousands of pounds outstanding from Rumania, will my hon. and gallant Friend's Department take into consideration the exercising of extreme pressure, even to the extent of an embargo on the export of sterling to Rumania, in order to bring them to their senses and so that they may carry out their obligations?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

The matter will be strongly pressed, and the discussions begin to-morrow.
