HC Deb 21 February 1935 vol 298 c527
48. Viscountess ASTOR

asked the Attorney-General whether he will give the number of women justices of the peace-at the latest available date?

The SOLICITOR-GENERAL (Sir Donald Somervell)

3,066 women have been appointed justices of the peace up to and including 1st January, 1935, but no information is available as to the number of women justices who have died.

Viscountess ASTOR

Will the Lord Chancellor consider appointing a good many more women, seeing how small is the number in comparison with the men?

The SOLICITOR-GENERAL

I would remind my Noble Friend of the figure given by my right hon. Friend the Home Secretary in answer to a question on 12th February last. My right hon. Friend stated that 400 women justices had been added to the commission of the peace during the last year.
