HC Deb 10 December 1935 vol 307 c720
27. Mr. MAXTON

asked the Secretary of State for War the number of officers and men in the Army who have committed suicide during the last 12 months, and whether any inquiry, other than coroner's inquests, has been made into the circumstances?

Mr. COOPER

The number of suicides in the Regular Army during the last 12 months, at home and abroad, including India, has been: one officer, and 36 men. Four of these were the subject of courts of inquiry.

Mr. MAXTON

Can the right hon. Gentleman say how many of these suicides are brought about by gun-shot wounds?

Mr. COOPER

Not without notice.

Sir J. NALL

Does the number of these cases bear the same ratio as in the civil population?

Mr. COOPER

Almost exactly the same.
