HC Deb 10 December 1935 vol 307 cc740-1
61. Mr. M. MacMILLAN

asked the Minister of Transport, in view of the promise of 100 per cent. grants to Highland counties for roads, whether he will consider the allocation to the authorities of Inverness and Ross and Cromarty of 100 per cent. grants for the specific purpose of constructing new roads and repairing and improving existing roads in the Western Isles?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of TRANSPORT (Captain Austin Hudson)

The roads to be dealt with under the scheme for the reconstruction and improvement, on the basis of 100 per cent. grants, of certain Class I roads in the crofter counties have been agreed—I think with appreciation—with the county councils concerned, and do include certain roads in the Western Isles. When a special measure of assistance such as this is given, my right hon. Friend feels it should not be treated as an occasion for further demands, and it must be realised that it enables the county councils to devote additional money from their own resources to the remaining roads in the counties.
