HC Deb 10 December 1935 vol 307 c726
33. Mr. JOHNSTON

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware of the continued flooding of land in the valley of the Kelvin whereby some 2,000 acres of land are rendered useless for agricultural purposes, and that the engineer for the Department of Agriculture for Scotland prepared plans four years ago, under Section 3 of the Land Drainage (Scotland) Act, 1930, for the remedying of the flooding; and whether he now proposes to take any steps in the matter?

Sir G. COLLINS

I am aware that portions of the valley of the Kelvin are liable to periodic flooding and that a draft scheme for the remedying of the flooding was prepared in 1931, in terms of the Land Drainage (Scotland) Act, 1930. Following the report of the Committee on National Expenditure, it was decided that this scheme should not proceed. The right hon. Gentleman is perhaps aware that I arranged this year for the continuance of the Act of 1930 in order that this and other schemes might be reconsidered. The matter is at present receiving very careful consideration.

Mr. JOHNSTON

When does the right hon. Gentleman think we may properly repeat the question?

Sir G. COLLINS

I will let the right hon. Gentleman know.
