HC Deb 09 December 1935 vol 307 c555
54. Mr. T. SMITH

asked the Secretary for Mines whether he intends to consult any or all of the countries who agreed to the Geneva Convention on working hours in coal mines with a view to expediting ratification?

Captain CROOKSHANK

As the hon. Member is aware, previous discussions between the Governments concerned have been called by the International Labour Office. I have no doubt that the Organisation will consider what further action in this direction can usefully be taken.

Mr. SHINWELL

Have the Government taken steps to bring pressure to bear on other Governments to ratify this Convention?

Captain CROOKSHANK

I have said that this is really a matter at present for the International Labour Organisation, which instituted these discussions. The position of the Government is well known.
