HC Deb 09 December 1935 vol 307 cc554-5
53. Mr. GEORGE HALL

asked the Secretary for Mines whether he can now make a statement as to the progress, if any, made in the discussions between the Government, the representatives of the mine-owners, and the Mineworkers' Federation, for an increase of wages for the miners?

Captain CROOKSHANK

Although the suggestions so far put forward by the coalowners are not acceptable to the Mineworkers' Federation of Great Britain, negotiations are continuing. I can say nothing more at present.

Mr. HALL

Can the hon. and gallant Gentleman assure the House that he is continuing his discussions with the representatives of the mineworkers and the coalowners?

Captain CROOKSHANK

I have said that negotiations are continuing.

Mr. SHINWELL

Can we have an assurance from the hon. and gallant Gentleman, and if possible from the Prime Minister, that in the event of a breakdown in the negotiations the House will be advised, so that we may be informed of the Government's intentions? Can we not have an answer on a matter of this importance?

Captain CROOKSHANK

Not to a hypothetical question.
