HC Deb 09 December 1935 vol 307 cc531-2
1. Mr. DAY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he has any statistics and can state the number of Anglo-Indians that have been replaced by Indians in the employ of the Indian State Railway during the last five years?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Butler)

There have been reductions of staff during the last five years among all the communities. It is not possible from the figures which I am circulating in the OFFICIAL REPORT to make any inference with regard to the second part of the hon. Member's question.

Mr. DAY

Is it not against the declared policy of the Government for Anglo-Indians to be displaced by Indians?

Mr. BUTLER

I think the hon. Member had better study the figures I am sending to him.

Following are the figures:

The following table shows the number of Europeans, Indians and Anglo-Indians on rates of pay of Rs.250 and upwards serving in the State Railway Services in each of the years 1930–34.

Europeans. Anglo-Indians. Indians. Total.
1930 2,216 2,747 2,671 7,634

1932 2,042 2,498 2,532 7,072
1933 1,929 2,439 2,499 6,967
