HC Deb 17 April 1935 vol 300 cc1843-4
45. Mr. G. HALL

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the promise of substantial sums of money by the representatives of the South Wales coal-owners and the South Wales Miners' Federation to establish a pension scheme for the miners in South Wales, the Government will co-operate with this effort by giving financial assistance and, if desired, in the negotiating of the details of the scheme

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Ramsay MacDonald)

I understand that the parties concerned have not yet had time to consider even the preliminary problems inherent in the proposed scheme, and until the scheme has taken shape to some extent it is not possible to say in what directions, if any, the Government may be best able to assist in its development., but I hope very much that South Wales will not be the only district to adopt this admirable idea. I fear, however, that I can hold out no hope of Government financial assistance.
