§ 42. Mr. MANDERasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will state the nature and object of the protest made by the British Ambassador in Washington with regard to the production of certain evidence before the United States Senate arms inquiry?
§ The LORD PRESIDENT of the COUNCIL (Mr. Baldwin)No official protest has been made to the United States Government. His Majesty's Ambassador at Washington has, however, expressed informally to the United States Secretary of State the hope that, when consideration is given to the proposal to investigate the war time correspondence of certain United States banks in connection with the financing of purchases of munitions by the Allied Governments, the 1676 danger of a revival of long-since obsolete controversies, which might have an undesirable effect on the present international situation, should be borne in mind.
