HC Deb 16 April 1935 vol 300 c1676
43. Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what is the total number of officials and other persons attached to the German Embassy and the German Consulate in London at present and what was the total number on 1st January, 1933; and what is the total number of officials and other persons attached to all the other German Consulates in the United Kingdom at present and what was the total number on 1st January, 1933?

Mr. BALDWIN

According to latest information the staff of the German Embassy comprises about 33 persons. This figure does not include chancery servants or domestics. I am not in a position to state the corresponding figure for the 1st January, 1933, but if the right hon. Gentleman wishes to make a comparison it may be said that a record is available which shows that towards the end of 1929 the figure was about 25. Since then the staff of the Embassy has been increased by the appointment of Naval, Millitary and Commercial Attaches and five more shorthand-typists. There is no independent German Consulate in London, the duties being carried out at the Embassy. His Majesty's Government have no information as to the number of officials employed in consular duties at the Embassy, or as to the number of subordinate officials employed under the various Consuls-General, Consuls and Vice-Consuls acting in this country for foreign Governments.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Has there been an increase in the number of Consuls-General and Vice-Consuls in this country?

Mr. BALDWIN

I could not answer that question without notice.
