HC Deb 16 April 1935 vol 300 c1668
30. Mr. LEONARD

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether it is the general policy of the prison department to compel prison warders to retire at the age of 55 and employ them as temporary officers; whether the object is to reduce the pensions of the officers concerned on retirement as permanent officers; and whether he is aware that, by the Superannuation Act, 1919, a prison officer is obliged to retire at the age of 60 and not at 55?

Sir G. COLLINS

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative and the second part does not therefore arise. Under the Superannuation Acts and relative Orders in Council it is competent for the Prisons Department to call upon a prison officer to retire at any time after reaching the age of 55, retiral being in any case compulsory at 60.
